Boston – Boston is the capital and largest city in the state of Massachusetts. It is the home of Harvard University, the most prestigious and oldest University in the country. Cambridge – Cambridge was named in honor of the city by the same name in England. The city is home to Cambridge College, and part of Harvard’s campus is located in the city as well. It is the birthplace of famous people such as Ben Affleck and Yo-Yo Ma. Springfield – Many say Springfield is the crossroads of New England because many major railroads that intersects there. The city has the largest school district in the state. Springfield was the home of Shays Rebellion. Westfield – Although settled in the 1600’s, Westfield was officially named a city in 1920. It began as an agricultural city, but quickly moved to an industrial city. Westfield currently has a population of around 40,000 people. Northampton – Claire Higgins is the mayor of Northampton as of 2005. Native Americans originally inhabited the city until the Europeans settled there. Northampton has four elementary schools and two high schools. Taunton – Taunton was originally known as the “silver city” because of heavy silver mining there. Elizabeth Pole founded it in 1839. The population of Taunton is approximately 56,000 according to the 2000 US census. Woburn – Woburn, Massachusetts is the setting of the book entitled A Civil Action based on events that happened there in the 1970’s. A Civil Action is also the name of a movie based on the same book.
